Hi, i'm new here so please forgive me if this has already been answered or is in the wrong place.
I bought a astra g a few weeks ago and to say the least its not been going good. Had an engine management light on the dash and now my local vauxhall dealer said I need either a new ecu or a trottle body. Then a few days ago thanks to meeting another driver on a narrow back road that didn't stop I scraped my rear panel and wheel arch. Then after taking of my wheels to paint my calipers I have since lost two wheel nuts. I was told I needed to retighten all the nuts. So i tried that tonight and wile doing the first one I heard a snap. I managed to shear the head of the bolt and now the tread is stuck inside the hub. Does anyone know how i can get it out? And is it safe to drive with only four out of five studs in?

Hi m8 welcome to the site (Y) sorry to hear about your nightmare with you astra bud. if when you take the other 4 bolts out and get the wheel off there is still a bit of stud poking out the you can either try some mole grips or take it to a garage/tyre shop most should have stud extractors and that should do it but if there isnt then it need to be drilled out and re threaded or you could get a second hand hub and replace it. you could also try taking off the disc if there is no thread poking out as with the disc off it may allow a little to poke out good luck bud (Y)

hi mate youll be ok for a little while with only the 4 studs.. but u will need to drill it out and get an extractor kit.. not that expensive from a DIY store screw that in to teh hole u drill the oposite way obviously like the extractor is supposed to and it will go tight then clonk crack it off and then just turn it out just take you time to drill a smallish hole - meduim hole straight through the middle of the bolt.. so u dont bugger up any of the threads or ne thing..the in the hole is were the extract will fit perfectly..

4 out of 5 bolts is fine to be honest, to get the bolt out it needs to be drilled out, and re-threaded as said, where are you from? as theres a place near my that does it :) same thng happened to my mate :)

Thanks very much for the help. I brought it in to the local tyre centre and they sent me to a mechanic who just said I needed a new hub, but he didn't even know were I could get one so he wasn't much good. I'm going to try having the stud extracted when I get it back from the bodyshop whos fixing the wheel arch and panel. The way I see it is if I'm replacing the hub it doesn't matter if I damage that one. How is it retreaded?
smilfy, I'm from Northern Ireland. And none of the tread is outside the hole so i can't get a grip on it with anything.

the mecanic is talkin crap, you can drill bolts out etc he just wants to make money off you, i would say try another garage, possibly one that come recomended from mates etc, although i doubt it will work i would have a go with stud extractor mate, has to be worth a shot and they aint too much to buy

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=0446863 obviously you will will have to make sure that you get the correct size etc but its not a hard job for someone who is reasonably compitant with basic hand tools, i would say have a go and save money on mechanics bills

Or what you could do is just get someone with a welding set and tack weld any old bolt to the stud and just un-do it :D

was it really tight when you were doing up the bolt from the start ? (crossthreaded) or was it loose and when you decided to give it one extra turn it just snapped ? (overtightened).

if it was overtightened, really easy to do get a punch, place it in the center of the stud and whack it with a hammer, (it will stop the drill bit dancing around on the top of the bolt) get a good dill bit and drill a hole about 15mm deep, get ya stud extractor kit and wind the bolt out.

a cross threaded bolt is a lot harder to do and involves taps and die's e.t.c so that would be best done by a good garage or maybe a machene shop will do it for you.

hope this helps !
